How is Required Area calculated for Branched Weld Connection?

The calculation is using the following is the equation that we use for A3 – REQUIRED AREA

A3 = Ar – A1-A’2

where,

  • Ar = Reinforcement Required
  • A1= Reinforcement Provided
  • A’2 = Corrected Effective Area

Note: If HUBPL calculates A3 < 0, it will be set to 0.
Calculations for the variables above is documented in the TTI Support Wiki at:Reinforcement of Welded Branch Connection

E.g. Demo case in Reinforcement of Welded Branch Connection – ASME B31.8 (Revision: 10.0.0) (Gas)

E.g. Demo case (A3 > 0):

From the demo case, the following is calculated:

Ar = 2.423 inch2

A1 = 0.530 inch2

A’2 = 0.392 inch2

A3= 2.423-0.530-0.392 inch2 = 1.501 inch2

E.g. Case where A3 = 0:

Ar = 0.199 inch2

A1 = 0.676 inch2

A’2 = 0.216 inch2

A3= Ar – A1-A’2 = -0.693 inch2

Because A3 was calculated, to be < 0 from the data provided to calculate the variables above, HUBPL will calculate A3’s final value to 0.
